by Cecil Pearl Dryden

Library of Congress Card No. 58-5325.
Departing St. Louis on 11 Mar, 1811,
Wilson Hunt led the next great expedition west after Lewis and Clark under
the auspices of the John Jacob Astor "Pacific Fur Co.". Purpose
was to achieve a monopoly on the furs of the Oregon country and to wrest
control of same away from the British dominated Northwest Company.
The scheme included barter and trade with the Indian tribes and trade with
Russian America and China as well. This scheme is also mentioned
at length in Washington Irving's "Astoria". Recommended
